CDU and SPD: Talking about minority government in Saxony!

Stand: 08.11.2024 4:24 pm

The Saxon CDU under Prime Minister Kretschmer is faced with a crucial step: Next week the SPD will be negotiated with the formation of a minority government! This announcement came directly from Tom Unger, the CDU's provisional general secretary, after a meeting of the state board. "We have been chosen to serve Saxony. We are obliged to vote," emphasized Unger. The CDU wants stability and is ready to speak to the Social Democrats.

On Thursday there will be discussions between the CDU parliamentary group and the state board. The SPD has already signaled that it accepts the CDU offer. "This requires responsibility for our country and its people," said the SPD chairman Kathrin Michel and Henning Homann. These discussions are particularly explosive because the previous coalition negotiations with the BSW failed on November 6th. Prime Minister Kretschmer blamed BSW chairwoman Sahra Wagenknecht for failure after no agreement could be reached on central topics such as migration policy and finance.

Next weekend, the Saxon CDU will meet for a closed conference in Lichtenwalde near Chemnitz. This session is of great importance because it focuses on government formation. In addition to the parliamentary group, the state board will also be present to discuss the further procedure. Political scientist Tom Thieme was optimistic about the possibility of a minority government and emphasized that this did not have to mean the end of Saxon state parliamentarianism. In Thuringia, a minority government under Bodo Ramelow worked for five years, even if the balance was mixed.
