Bitter times for the new state secretaries: coalition crisis threatens!
A newly formed duo presents itself in the heart of Austrian politics: Alexander Pröll from the ÖVP and Michaela Schmidt from the SPÖ, both of which are freshly appointed State Secretary. They are responsible for the coordination and harmonization in Austria's first three coalition. Both enjoy the full trust of their party leaders, Christian Stocker (ÖVP) and Andreas Babler (SPÖ), as . In order to learn from the mistakes of the former black and green coalition, Pröll and Schmidt rely on clear and quick communication instead of overloaded measures. This means that only individual, promptly communicated measures, such as the planned fee increases from April, should be brought into focus.
In a first positive measure, the coordination team decided to set the rental price brake, which is a great success for the SPÖ. Other measures that are in the luggage of the two state secretaries aim to create a balance between the different party interests. The planned increase in health contributions for pensioners from June, which already ensures displeasure in the ranks of those affected, is a significant challenge. The financial challenges, in particular due to the deteriorating economy, could lead to tensions between the two coalition partners in the future, such as note.
In addition, the economic uncertainty, which is characterized by falling growth rates and increasing savings constraints, is considered a possible ignition cord for conflicts between Economic Minister Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer (ÖVP) and finance minister Markus Marterbauer (SPÖ). The latter is known for his clear positions, which are contrary to the interests of the economy. These dynamics within the government could test the cooperation between the different political camps, while the coalition starts fresh and optimistic.
