Dispute over arrest: Military blocks investigators before presidential residence

Hannam-dong, Seoul, Südkorea - A dramatic scenario took place in South Korea on Friday, January 3, 2025, as an investigator of the anti-corruption authority (CIO), attempted to take the deposed president Yoon Suk Yeol. After over five and a half hours of use at the presidential residence in Hannam-Dong, however, they had to deduct them because they were blocked by around 200 security forces and military members. This blockade led to a threat to the civil servants used, which caused the CIO to cancel the attempt to arrest, such as Korea Joongang Daily reported .

The arrest warrant against Yoon, which is charged with abuse of power and conspiracy for fulfillment, expires on Monday, January 6th, at midnight. However, the CIO has the option of applying for an extension of the arrest warrant. Yoon was criticized during his term after he had briefly proclaimed war law on December 3 during a budget for the Opposition. This controversial decision led to his office survey, which is currently being checked by the Constitutional Court. Cha Sang-Mok, the former finance minister, is currently heading the business, such as vienna.at reported .

attempt to arrest and resistance

The mood was tense with the failed attempt to arrest. CIO emergency services, supported by the police, had reached the residence in the early morning, only to find out that they were blocked 200 meters from their target. Despite all the efforts to make contact with Yoon, they could not meet him, and the lawyers of the former president described the attempt as "illegal". At the same time, the head and the deputy head of the presidential security service were reported for disability of official acts, which only heated up the wave of controversy.

The political parties react differently to the events. While the liberal democratic party is pushing to quickly arrest the alleged mastermind of the unrest, the conservative people's power party described the attempt to arrest as inappropriate. The situation remains tense while the CIO rethinks its next steps and the time is pushing because the arrest warrant will soon expire.
