Scandal around Wilhelm-Grobben-Straße: Greens demand renaming!
In the city of Kempen, the discussion about the renaming of Wilhelm-Grobben-Straße causes a stir. The application to change the name is supported by the ecological-democratic party (ÖDP) after an incident triggered a debate about Wilhelm Grobbens in National Socialism during a public event. ÖDP parliamentary group leader Jeyaratnam Caniceus and deputy chairman Günter Soleki have spoken out for the renaming of the street.
The event for the discussion is a quote from the highest NSDAP member Wilhelm Grobben, which was used during a speech in the cinema on the butter market. This speech took place in December of the previous year during a demonstration of an image film in the city. The speech was interrupted by Soleki, which led to a turmoil. After the event, Soleki received thanks and recognition from the visitors for his intervention.
historical backgrounds and demands
The Greens had already submitted an application to renaming Wilhelm-Grobben-Straße in 2019. This step was challenged due to Grobbens NSDAP past, since he acted as a local group leader and campaigned for the National Socialist racial apprenticeship. As early as 1964, Grobben was honored posthumously with the naming of the Fliederstraße, which was assigned to him due to his merits as a home poet in Kempener dialect. Nevertheless, his past is not to ignore as a circular culture attendant who campaigned for the forced sterilization of people with disabilities.
Although the City Council's City Council in 2019 voted with a narrow majority for the renaming, the main committee decided to maintain the name, but with an additional sign that informs about Grobbens NSDAP past. So Grobben's poems remained present in the city, although the critics asked to name his role in National Socialism more clearly.
In the current discussions, Nicole Marquardt demanded that the Greens be revised that the street name is revised and that coarse role is also critically questioned in the urban representation. Another request from the Greens should not only provide for the renaming of Wilhelm-Grobben-Straße to "Anita-Schreieck-Straße", but also stimulate the establishment of a working group to check further stressful street names in Kempen. In addition, the SPD 2021 had made an application to review all street names after 1870.The proposed name change to Anita-Schreieck-Straße is to remind you of a respected teacher and fighter for humanity who received the Federal Cross of Merit and died in October 2015
