ÖVP and FPÖ: Missed opportunity or historic turning point?

In a dramatic political disaster for the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), coalition negotiations with the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) have finally failed. Christian Stocker, acting ÖVP boss, gives the decisive reason for the end: FPÖ boss Herbert Kickl. “We were warned about this at home and abroad,” explained Stocker, who emphasized that it was not the FPÖ itself, but Kickl’s claims to power that caused the negotiations to collapse. Despite numerous warnings, the ÖVP did not allow itself to be overcome against the security risks that an FPÖ-led interior ministry could bring with it.

Stocker denied the possibility of cooperation under the current conditions and emphasized that the country's security should not be jeopardized. “It is out of the question for us to put the country's security at risk in government negotiations,” he made it clear. Despite initial concessions from the ÖVP, such as offering the FPÖ its own asylum ministry, the agreement remained unreached. The ÖVP leader noted that the Freedom Party had a real chance of winning the chancellery, but did not take advantage of this opportunity.

The way forward

With the failure of the blue-black coalition, the ÖVP is now dependent on the Federal President's decision. “Now it’s the Federal President’s turn,” said Stocker. There is still a willingness on the part of the ÖVP to bear responsibility, and the approval of the SPÖ and NEOS signals a possible new edition of coalition talks. While Stocker remains seen as the future leader of the ÖVP, his upcoming election as party leader remains uncertain as the political landscape can change rapidly.
