Öcalan open for peace: Hope for new dialogues with Turkey!
A historical meeting on the prison island of Imrali causes a stir: Abdullah Öcalan, the detainees of the Kurdistan workers' party (PKK), has apparently spoken out for a dialogue with the Turkish government. During a visit to the ProKurdische Party, Sirri Süreyya Önder and Pervin Buldan, Öcalan stated that he would want to make a positive contribution to that of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Devlet Bahçeli, the chairman of the MHP, proposed peace efforts. This development comes after a tenth year long break, in which the delegation could not get in touch with Öcalan, such as the fr.de reported.
New glimmer of hope for a peace process
The discussions between the Der Delegation and Öcalan, which are considered crucial for a possible new peace process, come at a time when the last attempt at peace in 2015 failed. Nevertheless, Tuncer Bakirhan, co-party leader, expressed the hope that these talks could initiate a new era. However, observers are skeptical whether a peace process will actually follow, especially after the country has been shaken by violence again. The conversations are subject to a complex political framework that could have a hard time affecting real progress.
Öcalan, who has been imprisoned since 1999, endangered the lives of many people in the name of his cause and is classified as a terrorist. This now desired approach could nevertheless represent signs of long -term changes in Turkish politics and lay the foundation for a more peaceful future.
