Coalition crisis: ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS struggle for household and reforms!
In the political negotiations between the ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS to stabilize the Austrian state budget, tensions are emerging. A central point of dispute is the planned liberalization of the shop opening times, which caused numerous reactions and especially the SPÖ. While one has already agreed in other areas such as immigration and residential construction, the corners and edges still seem to find an end in economic and tax policy. All the more important are the upcoming budget negotiations that will take place on Friday in the Palais Epstein, as Ö24 reported.
The declared goal of today's negotiations is to define a clear consolidation path for the urgently needed financial policy measures by 2028. There are different scenarios on the table: a renovation over four or seven years, with different approaches that include a volume of 15 to 24 billion euros. A serious crisis could arise for the government if an agreement should remain again. At the same time, the parties are trying to work more efficiently with smaller control groups, with only five instead of seven people per party, as the Kleine Zeitung reported.
lighthouse projects and the role of the Neos
The NEOS also rely on so -called lighthouse projects in order to make the political action of the coalition visible. They demand real structural reforms instead of vaguity and do not want to limit themselves to compromises between the ÖVP and SPÖ. This requirement could significantly determine whether the NEOS will remain in this triple coalition or not. In the case of budget negotiations, the pressure of the governors, such as Upper Austria's Thomas Stelzer, could also influence the negotiations. He demands speed and tangible results, while the Burgenland Hans Peter Doskozil insists that the federal states should not be held accountable for the budget problems.
