Viennese children and adolescents shape the future in the town hall!

On February 26, 2025, a total of 295 young people, consisting of 60 delegates of the youth parliament and 235 children of the children's parliament, gathered in the Vienna town hall to present their concerns and ideas. Together with city politicians, they worked intensively on the design of the 2025-2030 children and youth strategy. Vice Mayor Christoph Return said: "Today, your politics- for your future and for a Vienna that will be even more child and youthful." He emphasized the importance of the ideas of the young participants, who will have a direct impact on the upcoming strategy. Nine city and municipal councils were available to the children and young people for the dialogue.

The Vienna Children's and Youth Parliament, which was founded in the local council in 2020, offers young citizens the opportunity to actively participate in political decision-making processes. The event included interactive play elements, which served to prepare for the subsequent discussions. Program manager Benjamin Schmid from Wienxtra explains that the collected topics of the young participants will incorporate into urban politics. "The children's and youth parliament creates a platform that gives young people a real voice," says Schmid. The next handover of the results developed to the city government is planned for April 10, 2025, where the concerns collected are officially handed over.

Different subject areas were treated, including climate protection, participation and psychosocial care. The committed discussions of the young people show how seriously they deal with complex topics. Vice Mayor Katrin Gaàl emphasized that it was a great opportunity for girls in the city to hear in parliament. Other city politicians also emphasized the importance of this dialogue in order to make Vienna the most child and youth-friendly city, as already defined in the Vienna Child and Youth Strategy, which includes 193 measures. Over 300 children and adolescents took part in parliament last year, and in autumn 2023 the next round begins, in which important topics are to be discussed again.
