Ukrainian government approved the construction of two new nuclear reactors!

Ukraine is taking a significant step towards strengthening its energy supply: The Ukrainian government has decided to buy two nuclear reactors from Soviet design from Bulgaria in order to complete the expansion of the Chmelnyzkyj nuclear power plant in West Ukraine in 1980. The Ukrainian Parliament approved this with 261 to 226 votes, which is above the required majority of 226 votes. According to estimates, the acquisition of the reactors will cost at least 580 million euros, such as Krone reported.

struggle for security and energy self -sufficiency

With two existing blocks and a total capacity of 2000 megawatts, the Chmelnyzkyj nuclear power plant, the smallest of the three active nuclear power plants in Ukraine, is upgraded to a total of six reactors by this measure. These should not only expand the current capacities, but also help to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels. In addition, Ukraine is planning to put a fifth and sixth reactor into operation with US technology in the future in order to better prepare themselves against the ongoing attacks of the Russian troops, which have occupied the largest nuclear power plant in the Saporischschja area since 2022, such as Allgäuer Zeitung reported

This strategic decision is particularly important, since Ukraine covers more than half of its electricity requirements by atomic energy. At a time when Russian attacks on the energy infrastructure try to disturb the current flow effectively, the conclusion of the reactors is perceived as an urgently needed measure to ensure energy supply. The purchase is expected to be supported by the acquisition of equipment from the Bulgarian nuclear power plant, which was also started in the 1980s, but never completed, which could further strengthen Ukraine's ability to produce sustainable energy production.
