Political history in the Palais Epstein: A former gem in change

In the magnificent Palais Epstein, which has over 150 years of history in the walls, the government negotiators are currently days: inside of the ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS. This impressive building on the ring road, which was created in 1871 under the leadership of the architect Theophil Hansen, was once the home of the wealthy Epstein family. The magnificent rooms in the "Beletage" once served festive occasions, today the palace is in the center of parliamentary negotiations, such as ots.at reported.

The eventful history of the Palais began with Gustav Ritter von Epstein, who lost his banking business in 1873 after a devastating stock exchange crash and finally the palace. From 1902 the building housed various institutions, including the administrative court and later the city school council. After the Second World War, the Soviet troops used the Palais until their withdrawal in 1955. Later it was supposed to act as the seat of the Vienna City School Council until 1998 the Federal Immobilizer Society acquired the building, as parlament.gv.at explained.

a palace for politics

The need to create apartments for parliamentarians: the Palais Epstein became a strategic point for parliamentary management. In view of the space problems in parliament, Sigurd Bauer initiated the purchase of the palace to use the rooms for legislative purposes. On November 19, 1998, the proposal for purchase was unanimously accepted, and after extensive renovation, the building was officially opened in 2005 as part of the parliamentary process. Today the palace not only serves as an office space, but also as an event location for conferences and government negotiations. The Palais Epstein is not just a historical monument, but a lively part of Austrian politics.
