Latvians call the introduction of compulsory military service in Europe

The Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs said on Sunday that European countries should “absolutely” introduce conscription to counter the threat of Russian aggression. This happens while Europe is increasingly concerned about the course of the war in Ukraine.

Latvia reintroduced the general conscription for adult men after this was abolished in 2006. The Baltic Land has a 290 -kilometer border with Russia in the east, which makes it particularly susceptible to Russian aggression.

rinkēvičs announced that in Latvia it was also discussed whether the conscription should be introduced for women. "No decision has yet been made. There is no legal obligation ... this is a topic of discussions, but no decisions were made," he said.

He added: "Of course, a strong calming is important, but another aspect are the real measures that are taken by the Latvian government and other European governments to ensure that we all become stronger."
