Pro-European coalition: A new president for Romania in sight!
In a dramatic political move, Romania's pro-European parties decided to form a majority that urges the right-wing extremist nationalists out of the game! This decision could decisively influence the future of the country while the political waves are upset.
The left-wing social democratic party (PSD), which cited the elections on December 1, has joined together in the night of Tuesday with the Central National Liberal Party (PNL), the Reformist Save Romania Union (USR) and the small ethnically Hungarian UDMR party. An alliance that could redesign the political landscape of Romania!
an alliance against the ultra -right
The elections also produced three ultra-nationalist and hard right groups, some of them openly pro-Russian, which won more than a third of the seats in parliament. This development shaken the political arena of Romania, especially after the allegations of election manipulation and Russian influence, which accompanied the first round of the presidential elections.
The confusion around the presidential election increased when the constitutional court only stopped the election days before the decisive runoff election on December 8th. This raises questions: Can the controversial candidate Calin Georgescu, who triumphed in the first round, start again? The public prosecutor's office is still investigating!
"In the coming days, the four parties and representatives of national minorities will work on a joint government program based on development and reforms and takes into account the priorities of the Romanian citizens," announced the newly formed coalition. A clear indication that the collaboration will not be easy despite different views.
a new president in sight?
The coalition plans to support a "joint pro-European candidate" for the upcoming presidential election. But the uncertainty about Georgescus possible candidacy remains while the investigation continues.
Elena Lasconi, the leader of the USR, who was supposed to assert herself in the cancellated runoff against Georgescu, commented: "Romania is experiencing a very difficult phase." She emphasized that reducing government spending and bureaucracy will be part of the government program.
However, analysts warn that the four parties, who have often argued about political questions in the past, will have difficulties to agree on certain economic measures. The new government will also work out a new schedule for the presidential elections, which are expected to take place in the first half of 2025.The outgoing President Klaus Iohannis will remain in office until a new president was taken and nominate a prime minister. The current legislative period ends on December 21st. A crucial moment for Romania that is preparing for a new political era!
