Cyprus in the crisis: the constant conflict between north and south!
Zypern, Land - The tensions on the shared island of Cyprus are boiled up again. On March 17, 2025, the parties to the dispute reached an agreement on the resumption of negotiations. The parties to the conflict, consisting of the Greek-Cypric and Turkish-Cypric representatives, had long remained in a stuck state of the division. This separation was created in 1974, when a Greek coup resulted in a Turkish military intervention, which led to the foundation of the internationally not recognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The south of the island, on the other hand, is controlled by the Republic of Cyprus, which is recognized by the European Union. According to Kleine Zeitung , the negotiations come about through the pressure of the United Nations.
The Cyprus conflict, which is continuously associated with myriads of political notches and ethical tensions since division, includes demands for autonomy and a possible two-state solution. The Turkish Cypriots have long been calling for the recognition of their state structures, while Greek Cyprices and international actors hope for reunification. This is also considered in the light of the geostrategic importance of the island in the eastern Mediterranean, as wikipedia . With the recent development, new diplomatic channels and a positive dynamic could now be initiated that bring hope to the shared population for a solution to the ongoing conflict.
The strategic goal of the negotiations is to establish a stable and permanent peace that takes into account the interests of the Greek and Turkish-Cyprical Community. The UN buffer zone that has already been set up remains a central point that enables the international community to maintain a control mechanism in the region, while existing dialogue structures are to be promoted. In view of the long history of the conflict, the current approach is a step in the right direction, and many actors in the region are eagerly observing the upcoming negotiations.
