Track in St. Gallen: Two workers seriously injured!
In the night of Monday, shortly after 2 a.m., a serious train accident occurred in St. Gallen. A locomotive collided with a rail excavator during track work, which led to serious injuries. Two track workers, aged 29 and 40, were seriously injured in the accident and had to be taken to the hospital immediately. The 60-year-old locomotive driver was also taken to the hospital for control.
The large contingent of on-site emergency services included the St. Gallen professional fire brigade, three ambulances, two emergency doctors, as well as a fire and rescue train. A SBB intervention team also offered first -time psychological care. The St. Gallen city police and the public prosecutor were also present at the scene of the accident. The rail excavator was completely destroyed by the impact, and the track bed suffered massive damage in collision.
investigation and follow
The exact cause of the collision is so far unclear. The Swiss Security Examination Center (Sust) has already started an investigation to comprehensively analyze the incident. The rail traffic between St. Gallen and Goldach/Rorschach was interrupted due to the accident. Travelers have to expect train failures and a rail replacement. Therefore, a crane was requested, which will be on site around 11 a.m. to carry out the necessary repairs.
The current events are in the context of a worrying trend: According to a security report by the Federal Railway Office, the number of railway accidents has increased significantly in recent years. In 2022, 337 significant railway accidents were registered in Germany, which represents an increase of around 41 percent compared to the previous year. This development primarily affects the security situation on railway systems and calls for urgent measures to improve.
The accident in St. Gallen once again shows how important security is in rail traffic. Affected and relatives of the injured must now hope for support, while the Sust investigation should bring clarity over the background in the coming days.
The current developments are particularly annoying for travelers, as they bring additional inconvenience with regard to the existing problems in rail traffic. Authorities and railway companies are faced with the challenge of ensuring both security and restoring the smooth running of rail traffic.
