Vienna Climate Tour enthusiastic: 164 free swimming courses for kids!
In the summer of 2025, the city of Vienna offers a total of 164 free swimming courses for children and adolescents as part of the “Water adventure - free swimming courses” project. The aim of this unique project is to promote movement and to raise awareness of climate and resource protection. These courses were accepted with great enthusiasm and were fully booked two hours after registration.
The swimming courses are aimed at children from the age of six and young people up to 17 years and take place in seven urban baths, including the large field settlement pool. Participants have the opportunity to acquire an Austrian swimming badge after ten units. During the courses, interactive stations are offered that illustrate the ecological value of water.
Wiener climate tour and their offers
The Viennese climate tour, which is part of this initiative, also offers exciting interactive offers around the element of water. Climate Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky emphasizes that water plays an important role in many facets, be it as drinking water, waste water or in the context of the increasing sea level. The tour is on the road with eight electrically operated cargo bikes that cover different main topics, such as biodiversity, circular economy and city green. Information on current tour stops is available online at www.wien.gv.at/klimatour .
The initiative not only aims to teach children and adolescents to swim, but also to provide them with valuable knowledge of dealing with water. Over 1,000 young people can take part in these intensive swimming courses free of charge. This equal opportunities is a central aspect of the project, which is also intended to promote climate formation.
sustainable water use in Vienna
Another remarkable point is the sustainable use of water in Vienna. The Viennese high source water, which flows directly into the taps of the city from the Alps, is used in 16 drinking hydropower plants that not only provide drinking water, but also generate electricity. These capacities are sufficient to provide a city like Wiener Neustadt, for example. In addition, the Vienna sewage treatment plant cleans up to 500 million liters of wastewater daily and even produces more energy than it consumes.
To reduce the heat load in the city, Vienna also relies on innovative measures such as public drinking fountains, mobile foggy showers and spray plants. These initiatives show how important the combination of environmental protection and urban quality of life is and for which the Viennese climate tour is an outstanding example.
