Living in Vienna: Falling quality of life through exploding rental prices!
The housing costs in Austria are now a financial challenge for many people. A current study by Immowelt.at shows that two thirds of the respondents (a total of 1,000 people aged 16 and over) are unsure or concerned about their housing costs. This uncertainty can be observed in the city of Vienna, where 40 percent of the residents provide that their housing costs are hardly portable. The survey also showed that 30 percent of the respondents perceive their expenses as "just affordable", while 10 percent perceive them as critical.
The survey of Integral confirms the worrying situation. Almost half of the Austrians feel more than affordable, and three quarters of the citizens expect that it will hardly be affordable in 2030. The tenant's proportion, which has to deal with financial bottlenecks, is much higher than that of owners - only 7 percent of owners report difficulties to cover their housing costs.

overview of the tenancy
The situation in the tenancy is tense. In 2024, orf reported that the average rent in Austria is around 660 euros per month, which means a significant increase of 4.5 percent compared to 2023. Net rents vary strongly and depend on factors such as the location, size and year of construction of the apartments. According to statistics Austria, 24.8 percent of the main rental contracts are limited, and the proportion of temporary contracts for private rental apartments is 49.5 percent.
The housing market in Austria is in transition. The rapid rising rents and purchase prices are an enormous burden for many households, especially for those with less income. The need for efficient residential construction is undisputed, while politics is required to find solutions to make living in Austria affordable again.
