Vienna's impressive greening offensive: 344 projects for a greener life!

Wien, Österreich - On June 1, 2025, Vienna announced an impressive record of his greenery initiative, which recorded a record of projects in the current legislative period. According to the information from Wien.gv.at 23 districts implemented. This was done as part of the "livable climate pattern city" in the specialization rail, which was provided with 100 million euros to promote greening measures.

The main aspect of these measures is to make Vienna Klimafit for the future. By removing it, greening and cooling, the quality of stay is to be improved, heating hot spots should be defused and the microclimate is optimized. A total of 85,500 m² was newly greened, with over 3,300 new trees along the asphalt deserts were planted and 2,000 m² of water features were created to improve the microclimate.

successful projects and future prospects

The balance of the "Livelihood of Climate Vuse City" funding shows that 500,000 m² of new green space has been created in the past five years and another 400,000 m² are being planned. These include:

  • tangent park in favorites with 6 hectares of surface, a pond and a fountain playground.
  • redesign of Wagramer Straße with 100 trees and 8,000 m² new green areas.
  • greening of the left Wienzeile with 30 new trees and ranking plants.

For the future, the park "Auf der Schmelz" with 2,300 m² and 30 new trees is planned.

Consideration of vulnerable groups

The city of Vienna also works on a project that examines the effects of urban heat on vulnerable groups in the city. As part of the project Urbanheatquality it is analyzed how natural-based solutions (NBS) can improve the quality of life.

The project takes into account the interests of marginalized social groups that are particularly susceptible to heat stress. Interviews and participative planning exercises are intended to ensure that your needs are integrated into the development of urban climate adaptation strategies.

climate change adjustment in cities

The challenges of climate change can also be felt in urban planning. According to Federal Environment Agency fight cities with higher temperatures and an increasing degree of sealing, which makes the need for green spaces all the more urgent. These include roof and facade greening, which can serve as cost-effective measures to adapt.

Green systems not only improve the quality of life, they also offer relaxation and protection against floods. Measures such as the creation of new cold air trains and the promotion of urban garden projects play a crucial role in reducing future heat loads and maintaining a pleasant urban climate.
