New art center in the Funkhaus: Experience creative diversity by 2025

In the Funkhaus in Vienna, an exciting art project will soon take on: From October, artists will move into the earlier premises of Ö1 and ORF Vienna. The creative space will be available until summer 2025. The project is organized by the "Never At Home" association, which makes empty areas accessible for artistic purposes.

Vera Grillmaier, the project manager, describes the radio house as a special location that is known to many. Around 100 artists have the option of using rooms between 10 and 30 square meters. A big advantage is that the artists can design these rooms individually. "It is allowed to be creative - you can paint, screw and shape how you want," says Grillmaier.

creative community and new offers

Currently visits are carried out for everyone interested. The variety of art disciplines is large and there is even space for music professional rooms. These benefit from the good sound insulation of the former radio studios. In addition, a ceramic workshop is to be created in one of the empty garages.

A central goal of the project is to not only offer the artists to private studios, but also to create common areas. "It may sound a little clichéd, but common projects are often created at the meetings," says Grillmaier. It is also announced that a pop-up gastro project should be realized in the former radio house canteen.

affordable rooms for creative minds

The conditions for the studios are attractive: for only 15 euros per square meter and month, young creative people can move into these inspiring rooms. "Never At Home" works closely with the Vorarlberg construction company Rhomberg, which is the owner of the partly listed building. "The association does not bear any rent because we take part in the operating costs," said Grillmaier.

In addition, there will be a special opportunity in November to visit the radio house from the inside. At an “Open House” event, visitors can observe the artistic activities and talk to the artists working there. Regularly planned workshops and free exhibitions should also offer a platform for creativity. So far there is no information about the future Rhomberg plans for the radio house.
