Vienna extends apartment campaign: Help for tenants in need until February 2025
Wien, Österreich - The city of Vienna has launched a special campaign to offer the many citizens whose temporary rental contracts will soon expire, urgently needed living space. This initiative, which was extended by the end of February 2025, enables Viennese to obtain indefinite community apartments. So far, 513 people have already been able to find their new residence, while another 300 are currently in the selection or sightseeing process. A total of 1,000 new apartments with 1 to 3-rooms are available, as reported by today .
The pressure under which many tenants are in the private sector has increased significantly in recent years, since almost half of all rental contracts are now limited. Two decades ago, there were 93 percent permanent contracts. Vice mayor Kathrin Gaál emphasizes the need for a reform of the tenancy law in order to create a fair system for tenants and landlords. This problem is particularly noticeable in old building apartments, where up to 84 percent of the tenants indicate excessive prices, despite legal requirements for cheaper temporary contracts. This has a particularly oppressive effect on persons who face the uncertainty whether they can keep their apartments, which makes the decision to apply for a community apartment, all the more important, as reported by wien.gv.at .
conditions of participation and support
In order to qualify for the municipal apartments, certain requirements must be met: minimum age of 18 years, at least two years of main residence in Vienna, Austrian citizenship or equality as well as the compliance with income. This program is aimed mainly at people who may otherwise not be entitled to a community apartment, but are faced with the threat of letting to housing due to lease. Interested parties can provide comprehensive information at the Vienna Wohnberatung and receive access to the online community apartment search after their applications have been examined.
