Vienna starts housing offensive: 1,000 permanent rental apartments for everyone!
Wien, Österreich - The city of Vienna helps people in need of help! A special campaign has been running since July 1 of this year that supports people with expiring rental contracts in order to prevent threatening homelessness. So far, 513 Viennese have been able to move into permanent municipal apartments, while over 300 other people are currently in the selection or sightseeing process. The city provides a total of 1,000 apartments with permanent rental contracts that are available by the end of February 2025.
"Temporary leases in the private environment, many Viennese burden enormously," explains Vice Mayor and Councilor Kathrin Gaál. More and more people are affected by the uncertainty of temporary leases; A current study shows that the proportion of these contracts has increased to almost 50 percent in recent years. Tenants in the old building in Vienna are particularly at risk, where around 70-80 percent of the advertised apartments are only offered for a limited period. In addition, around 84 percent of those affected indicate overpriced rents instead of the legally provided discounts for temporary contracts.

This housing offensive not only offers a committed answer to the increasing rental load, but also refers to all Viennese, the temporary rental contract of which expires within the next six months. Aspects such as a minimum age of 18 years, a two-year main residence in Vienna, and income borders in accordance with the Vienna Housing Development and Home Renewal Remance Act are taken into account in the conditions of participation. The special initiative also helps those who are usually not entitled to a community apartment if they meet the necessary criteria.
