Vienna Energy: Stability forecast for district heating in the 2024/25 heating season

The heating season 2024/25 has started in Vienna, and Vienna Energie has now sent the annual bills for the district heating customers. The current forecasts of the urban energy supplier give hope for a positive development. Michael Strebl, the CEO of Vienna Energie, expressed itself optimistic and believes that market prices will remain stable in the coming months. "For today's day we can assume that market prices will remain stable until next year," said Strebl at a media appointment.

Wien Energie divides its customers into two tariff models: the price notice tariffs and the indexed tariffs. In the case of price notice tariffs, the discounts remain from the previous year, which means that the labor price is 43 percent and the basic price is reduced by 20 percent. These prices will remain the same in the coming season, based on the official price notice from 2022.

For those who use indexed tariffs that are based on the wholesale price for natural gas, Vienna also predicts stable prices. Michael Strebl said: "We are currently seeing a sideways movement." Nevertheless, there is a plan to protect customers: If price increases occur, a protection package of 50 million euros will be available in order to cover the prices.

An additional payments for customers are particularly possible if consumption has increased or the partial amounts have been classified too low - for example by moving. In the case of price notice tariffs, however, the partial amounts are expected to remain stable. In the case of indexed tariffs, an increase in partial amounts could be necessary from November/December, since an energy aid package ends.

The supply of gas is secured for the upcoming heating season because the memory are 95 percent filled. In addition, Vienna does not publish any detailed information about its own storage capacity, but assures that the volume is sufficient to supply all household and commercial customers during the winter.
