Future of the Kinkplatz School: decided new use for monument?
The former computer science school at Kinkplatz in Penzing, a unique example of modern architecture, looks back on a long waiting time of seven years while hoping for a new use. Built between 1992 and 1994 according to the plans of the renowned architect Helmut Richter, the listed building is now looking for a future -proof concept that should be determined by the beginning of 2025.
The striking glass-steel structure, although aesthetically appealing, was stressed from the start from the beginning of technical defects. One of the main problems was the extreme heat that was bearable under the glass roof in summer. In addition, a photovoltaic system should donate shadows, but was never realized for cost reasons. Another shortcoming was the leaking of the gymnastics roof, which meant that water had to be collected in tubs - a significant disadvantage for the sports clubs located there. These problems finally led to rust and mold formation in the building.
The concept process and its opportunities
In 2017, a provisional alternative accommodation was set up in Torricelligasse. Two years later, the city decided not to use the building as a school. The planned comprehensive renovation, which was estimated at over 55 million euros in 2019, made school use financially impossible. Now the city has launched a concept process to re-award the area of about a hectare with a 99-year-old building law. The focus is not only on the financial aspect, but also the creation of an added value for the public.
The Wiener Lockeort Development GmbH (WSE) leads the allocation of the building law on behalf of the city. The sending period for offers ended on September 4, and at the beginning of October it was announced that a result should soon be determined. WSE spokesman Wolfgang Trimmel informed that no concept has yet been selected, but two projects are already in the shortlist. "It will no longer be educational institutions, but the building should be preserved to the public," said Trimmel.
an outlook on the possible plans
The planned reuse of the building is expected to include leisure activities as well as health and wellness facilities. A jury will decide at the beginning of next year which concept will receive the contract. Up to this point, it remains to be hoped that the unique halls will soon be able to take on a new, lively function.
