Traffic on the Lueg Bridge: from 2025 only one lane - what does that mean for us?
Traffic on the Lueg Bridge: from 2025 only one lane - what does that mean for us?
Am Brenner, one of the most important traffic arteries in Europe, the Lueg Bridge becomes a new narrow point. From January 1, 2025, traffic over the almost two -kilometer bridge must be severely restricted. The Austrian motorway operator ASFINAG announced that the bridge will only be accessible in one lane on 170 days a year to ensure traffic safety and to keep the bridge in an acceptable condition.
This conversion has long been causing discussions among the various political actors. The municipality of Gries am Brenner, led by Mayor Karl Mühlsteiger, is committed to a tunnel to reduce the noise and exhaust gases of the vehicles and to return their natural beauty to the region. However, this proposal is not well received in Vienna, and the conflict is still passionately fought in view of the need for a new building of the bridge.
changed traffic routing on the Luegbrücke
The bridge is in such a state that it is already supported with additional steel carriers for stabilization. In order to increase security, a single -lane is necessary from January 1, which is based on the results of the main examination. ASFINAG managing director Stefan Siegele emphasized that one had to act in the sense of traffic safety. "Everyone who drives across the bridge will surely come over it," he emphasized.
across the summer there has already been a test of the new traffic routing, and on strongly frequented days it will be possible to temporarily drive to two traces. This is done by a special traffic control, in which heavy trucks are guided through the medium strip. Regardless of the changes in traffic routing, additional technology is used: automatic scales are integrated into the road that ensure that all vehicles are checked for their weight, especially the heavy trucks that have to drive on the left lane. Vehicles over 3.5 tons that incorrectly arrive on the right lane are redirected by a discharge system.
measures for relief and driving bans
In order to protect the residents along the Brenner motorway, extensive measures were taken. This includes the construction of seven new barriers, which enable needs-oriented blocking of access and descents. In addition, 15 additional driving bans for foreign trucks are planned in Tyrol next year, which is a significant increase in the previous regulations. Nevertheless, the rolling country road, which enables the transport of truck fans by train, is increasingly used to relieve traffic on the street.
The preparations for the necessary renovation work on the Lueg Bridge begin on October 7th. In the weeks afterwards, temporary single -lane is to be expected, which, depending on the weather conditions, could take several weeks. The actual new building should start in spring 2025, not before 2030.
The bridge on the Brenner motorway is not only an important connection for transit traffic, but also a symbol for the ongoing challenges that the region has to deal with in dealing with increasing traffic. The argument for the best solutions shows the complexity and deep cracks in traffic policy between the different levels and regions.
