UNESCO claims: Mayor Ludwig remains optimistic about Vienna 2025

The discussion about the potential high -rise project at the Vienna Heumarkt continues to cause excitement and uncertainty. However, Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) was optimistic and believes that the historical center of Vienna may be deleted by the list of endangered world sites in 2025. He expressed this confidence in a meeting of the local council and made it clear that he could not influence the decisions of UNESCO.

The Heumarkt project, which is promoted by the Wertinvest company, has already been revised several times. The current plan provides to build a residential building with a height of almost 50 meters and a new building for the Intercontinental Hotel with almost 48 meters. There are concerns about the possible negative effects on the cityscape, which is why UNESCO recently left the center of Vienna on its "red list" for another year.

optimism for the preservation of the world heritage

In his remarks, Ludwig emphasized that despite the uncertainties, everything would be done to protect both the World Heritage Site and to implement a high -quality construction project. "I can only promise that we will do everything to combine two things here," said the mayor. Ludwig also referred to concrete steps that are taken by the city to develop a management plan for the world heritage.

According to Ludwig, it is important not to leave the area unchanged, but to strive for a modernization. Other facilities in the area should also be taken into account, such as the traditional ice skating club. It is about further developing a district with which one is currently not satisfied.

The historical center of Vienna is one of two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the city, which was recognized in 2001. The second World Heritage Site is the castle and the gardens of Schönbrunn. In the political landscape, however, there was criticism of Ludwig's optimistic explanations. The ÖVP expressed dissatisfaction and asked for more information about the measures that should contribute to securing the world heritage.

municipal councilor Elisabeth Olishar pointed out that in an urban report that a project variant previously rejected by the UNESCO, there was no need to reduce the construction project. These different perspectives on the Heumarkt project reflect the complexity of the situation and raise questions about what the next steps will look like.

The UNESCO conference, in which the status of the world heritage is decided, moves closer and the Vienna city government is waiting for the final decision on the Heumarkt project. Despite all the challenges, Mayor Ludwig remains optimistic that Vienna will successfully get out of the critical list.
