From boxing in Meidling to great success in the USA: Umar Dzambekov's rise

Umar Dzambekov, an emerging boxer, recently won his eighth professional fight in the USA and increased his impressive record to 10: 0. The 26-year-old decided to continue his career in the United States because, as he says, he finds passion and support for sport that he lacks in his homeland Austria. "The Americans are fanatics and are fully behind their athletes," says Dzambekov. The promoter Tom Löffler, known in the box scene, who is famous for his work with names such as the Klitschko brothers and Gennady Golovkin, has also campaigned for Dzambekov. "You have to be able to make something to make money in the USA," said Dzambekov, "you can't just be there and hope that the money will flow."

Despite the long way and the challenges, Dzambekov remained loyal to his homeland. He is proud that he laid the basics of his boxing career in Austria. "I got a lot of options in Austria that I might not have elsewhere," he says, expressing his wish to box there one day. "I want to improve the reputation of boxing in Austria," he adds.

His connection to home is strong and he has great respect for the support he has experienced as a native Chechen in Vienna. These roots are intended to help him grow in the hard world of professional sport. Dzambekov sees himself not only as a boxer, but also as a representative for Austria in international boxing. "I think I'm a possible incentive for young athletes. According to the motto: 'Look here, we can also do great things from Austria," he concludes.
