Alarming language deficits: almost half of the first graders in Vienna

The situation at the Vienna schools is becoming increasingly worrying. A current report shows that more than 44 percent of the first graders in Vienna do not have the necessary knowledge of German in order to be able to follow the lessons. These alarming numbers come from a request from the Standard to the Vienna City Councilor Christoph Return.

The connection between the origin of the students and their language skills is particularly striking. In districts with a higher proportion of people with a migration background, the percentage of children who have problems with the German language is also significantly larger. The proportion of second language learners in the Margaret district, where over 52 percent of the population of foreign origin, is even 73.8 percent of the first graders who can hardly or no German speak.

The situation is similar in other districts such as Rudolfsheim-Fünthaus and Favorites, which also have a high proportion of migrants. Here, more than 60 percent of the students cannot be sufficiently German to follow the lessons. In contrast, Mariahilf does best, with only 18.9 percent of the first graders who have difficulties with language. Nevertheless, this means that almost every fifth new pupils understand poorly or not at all.

The data illustrates how quickly the situation has changed. Two years ago, it was only 36 percent of the children who did not speak German well enough. This increase ensures heated debates between the government parties and the opposition, which blame each other for the situation. While the ÖVP criticizes the failure in early childhood education, the SPÖ points to the insufficient funds of the federal government.

It is also noteworthy that almost half of the population, exactly 49.7 percent, now has a migration background. Despite this alarming growth, the issue of migration is often neglected in the current discussion, although it is closely associated with the difficulties in the language promotion of the students. This development is of great importance for the future educational landscape in the capital.
