Students of the FHWN explore Amazon: Insight into e-commerce practice

Wiener Neustadt/Vienna-An exciting cooperation between Amazon Austria and the University of Applied Sciences Wiener Neustadt (FHWN) was launched to provide students of the master's degree in "E-Commerce Management" at the Wieselburg campus in the practice of the large online marketplace. Today, the students had the opportunity to visit the Amazon distribution center in Vienna Liesing and to take a look behind the scenes of the complex logistics and operating processes that benefit over 1,500 small and medium-sized companies every day.

Florian Brezina, the site manager of the distribution center, said: "My team has been ensuring that the Packerl is delivered to our customers in the region on time and reliably." The inspection gave the students the opportunity to understand how every step in the process - from the acceptance of goods to delivery - merges to ensure a smooth process.

Rainer Neuwirth, the head of the master's degree in e-commerce, emphasized the importance of this partnership: "This cooperation enables us to combine the theoretical knowledge that is conveyed to the students with valuable practical knowledge." Such excursions are a first -class opportunity for students to exchange ideas with experts and learn directly from them.

During the visit, the students also received information about how companies can market their products through Amazon. According to current figures, more than 350 small and medium -sized companies (SMEs) from Lower Austria sell their products via Amazon and achieve considerable sales. In 2023 they sold over 2 million products, which led to export sales of over 70 million euros. In total, over 2,500 Austrian SMEs sell their goods via the Amazon Marketplace and thereby generated export sales of more than 610 million euros.

An example of success in sales via Amazon is the company Yosana from Hollabrunn, which offers sustainable yoga mats and accessories. The founders, Angelique and Christoph Sturmlechner, reported on their impressive growth: "We already achieved 10,000 euros in sales in the second month. Since then we have at least doubled our sales with the existing product portfolio annually." The students received valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities that lie in online sales, as well as tips regarding logistics and brand structure.

Another example is the beautician Astrid Reichhold-Hahn, who sells her care line "Dermipura" via Amazon. "For me, Amazon 2018 was the entry into cosmetic sales," she said. Thanks to the online marketplace, she was able to drive out her products with only little effort.

In addition to the practical insights into logistics, the students also benefit from the e-learning platform Quickstart Online, which Amazon launched in cooperation with partners such as the Austria Chamber of Commerce. In various seminars and workshops, experts share their knowledge of e-commerce, be it for their own web shop or marketplaces such as Amazon. So far, over 50,000 entrepreneurs have benefited from the inside from Austria and Germany from these offers to expand their digital business models.
