Bicycle path in Wundtgasse: sensible or loss of parking?
A heated discussion has been sparked in Wundtgasse after a new bike path has been set up. This cycle path, which is located near the southwest cemetery, hardly enjoys users and has drastically reduced the parking space. This causes resentment among the residents. A Meidlinger who regularly visits the cemetery noticed the changes: "I used to be here by car because there was enough parking spaces. Now this is no longer possible."
The complaints began when a part of the parking spaces fell away during maintenance work of the waterworks. The room was created after the construction work, but many residents cannot get used to the less frequented bike path. Another citizen expressed her anger: "I have never seen someone by bike here. The path seems unnecessary and financially not useful." The displeasure of the lack of use is in the room, especially after the project has apparently caused considerable costs.
The opinions are divided
Heinz Flickschuh from the Green Meidling is also interested in the topic and is critical of the new bike path: "It is positive if the network of cycle paths is expanded, but this section is a pure patchwork," he says. He is convinced that there are more important and much more busy roads that require an improvement in the cycling infrastructure. In particular, he calls Benyastraße and the Tanbruckgasse, which is located near the center.
Flickschuh also criticizes the current security in traffic and calls for more measures to improve crossing areas, especially at the Emil-Behring roundabout, since he has not seen any cyclists there. "It would be more important to make these points safer before we redesign other streets," he adds.
long -term visions
The district head Wilfried Zankl (SPÖ) defends the project as necessary for the future transport infrastructure. "The work in Wundtgasse is part of a comprehensive renovation project," explains Zankl. The cycle path is said to act as part of a larger cycling highway along the southern Railway, which not only wants to connect the rose hill but also the wild garden. "The entire route is expanded in parallel to the train and it will be a real bike motorway," announces Zankl. However, the completion will take at least 20 years, which dampens the zeal of the citizens.
The situation in Wundtgasse clearly shows how important it is to understand the needs of road users and at the same time use the financial means. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop in the coming years and whether the newly furnished bike path will ultimately be accepted or sinks into insignificance. More on this topic is here
