Josefstadt school wins with an innovative feed solution in Berlin
The Vienna Business School in Josephstadt recently caused a stir by winning two coveted prizes in a European competition in Berlin. The event, known as the "Youth Start European Entrepreneurship Award 2024", recently took place in the German capital and booted a variety of innovative ideas from young entrepreneurs.
The 3PK HAK Plus student team brought home the honor by achieving first place in the "Idea Challenge" category. Director Eveline Grubner was enthusiastic about the success: "We are very happy about the highest number of points ever reached," she said proudly.
The innovative solution for agriculture
The main reason for the victory of "feedalgo" was a new type of feed for cow keeping. This special feature is based on the Rotalge Asparagopsis TaxiFormis, which is known for its high Omega-3 share. The company has found that freezer -dried algae in the form of a nutritional supplement can reduce the methane emissions of the cows by over 80 percent as soon as they are administered to the animals.
The current average output of methane by cows is around 300 liters per day. A gift of 80 grams as a feed additive could already reduce this emission drastically without affecting the taste or quality of milk and meat. In addition, the application of the algae also promises an improvement in feed utilization, which could reduce total feed consumption by about 16 percent.
The students of "Feedalgo" hope that their innovative idea can soon be put into practice in cooperation with an Austrian dairy. This measure could not only contribute to more environmentally friendly use of resources, but also help agriculture to increase the efficiency of its production.
Overall, those responsible for the Vienna Business School welcome this success as a significant step into the future, both for the pupils and for sustainable development in agriculture. Such innovative approaches could take a pioneering role for future projects.
