Josefstadt climate protection award: creative ideas for a sustainable future

The seventh Josefstadt climate protection award has awarded impressive initiatives this year. A total of seven prizes went to innovative projects that are devoted to climate protection. A wide range of ideas were presented on the competition, from a rainwater management system to a non-profit food project.

"With 57 submissions we have achieved a new record this year," emphasizes district manager Martin Fabisch (Greens). He mentions that the great participation shows how important people are climate protection. The jury, consisting of various experts, had the difficult task of selecting the best projects from the numerous suggestions. For the outstanding ideas, price money was awarded with a total value of 4,000 euros.

Excellent projects at a glance

In the category "private individuals", the idea "Josefstädter Wasserpiele" by Heimo Frisch convinced. His concept provides for a rainwater management system that is supposed to save rainwater through above ground and save underground retention basin. In the "Company" category, the "Austrian hail insurance" was awarded, which follows a sustainable climate concept with various measures to green the inner courtyard and an e-fleet park.

Another impressive project came from the VHS Josefstadt, which performed art campaigns under the title "Urban Nature", in which 68 participants represented their creative ideas for nature and garden in the urban environment.

The category of educational institutions and NGOs saw the Vienna Business School in Schönborngasse as the winner. There the atrium was transformed into a "School Farm" with raised beds, where students learn how to garden. Florian Frauendorfer's “Frankenstein's Bicycle” project also proved to be successful; Here donated bicycles are repaired again and passed on to socially disadvantaged people.

The "Lange Tafel" project of the Bio-Markt Lange Gasse received the special prize. Once a month, the market stalls donate food to a local initiative, which prepares it with the support of surrounding restaurants. The prepared food is then served and eaten on a long table.
