Vienna is investing 130 million euros in new cycle paths - construction start on April 14th!

in Vienna, the comprehensive renovation of the Augarten Bridge begins on April 14, 2025. These measures are part of a larger project that is to significantly change the traffic structure in the 2nd district. The existing cycling strip is redesigned and converted into a structural two-way bike path to improve the connection to the cycling systems in Oberen Donaustraße and Lower Audartenstrasse. The adjustments to the intersection plateau and the renewal of the storage space in Oberen Donaustraße ensure that both pedestrians and cyclists can benefit from the new conditions.

The traffic measures during the construction period stipulate that from the start of construction until April 22, 2025, a straight-ahead and a right turn lane are available in the upper Donaustraße. From April 22nd, the traffic routing will be adapted to two lanes. During the construction work, there will be a lock of the cycle path crossing to the Lower Augartenstrasse and the cycle path in Oberen Donaustraße, but remained maintained during walking.

extensive cycle path offensive

These construction work are part of the Wiener Radwegoffensive , which includes over 250 projects and drives almost 100 kilometers in the main bike path network. So far, around 130 million euros have been invested in the expansion of the Viennese cycling infrastructure. So far, more than 50 kilometers of cycling infrastructure have been created in the district network. Another goal is to significantly increase the proportion of cycle paths in Vienna; In 2024 it was already 11 % compared to 7 % in 2019.

for 2025, 24 kilometers of new cycling infrastructure are planned in the construction program. In particular, the first section of the bike connection along Hütteldorfer Straße, which comprises 1.6 kilometers, was successfully completed at the end of 2024. In the course of the improvements, the bike path on the Naschmarkt will be redesigned at 200 meters and a 610 meter long two-direction cycle path is built in Neilreichgasse.

Sustainable measures in urban development

Another element of the cycle path offensive is the planting of three new trees by autumn 2025 in the project area around the Augarten Bridge. This initiative fits the measures already planned in other parts of the city, such as the planned greening of Julius-Standler-Platz on 8,000 square meters and the creation of a new "Klimahighway", which is to lead from the old Danube to the Marchfeld Canal

The redesign of the street space and the promotion of sustainable mobility are central points of these construction activities. The city of Vienna thus sets a clear sign of supporting cyclists and improving urban areas. These measures are not only a reaction to the growing need for mobility of the population, but also a step into a more environmentally friendly future.

The construction site is located on the intersection plateau Obere Donaustraße/Augartenbrücke/Untere Augartenstrasse and is expected to be completed by May 31, 2025.
