Viennese lines present new, clearer pictograms for passengers

From now on, the Viennese lines will introduce new priority pictograms in their public transport. These new symbols replace the previous representations and should convince with a simplified, clearer design. However, it is emphasized that the gender neutrality of these new illustrations has not been intentionally implemented, but is only a side effect of the optimization.

The old pictograms have so far been very specific in the Viennese subways, trams and buses, for example by portraying an older lady with typical features such as a handbag or a man with a child. For many passengers, it was easy to see who needs a seat if necessary.

new design and improved visibility

The new pictograms now show characters from a side perspective, and gender -specific attributes, such as hairstyles, were completely left out. The image of the pregnant figure is also shown without hair. The decision for this neutral style is not from an endeavor to gender neutrality, as the Viennese lines clarify, but aims to improve the visibility and readability of the pictograms.

Kathrin Schmidt, spokeswoman for the Viennese lines, explains that the old pictograms were often difficult to recognize. With the new illustrations, the colors and contrasts were reinforced to create a clearer appearance. In addition, the order of the symbols was changed, so that the pictogram for visual impaired people is now better integrated into the overall picture.

The new representation is gradually implemented in the means of transport, starting with the newer vehicles such as the Flexity Street Railways and the X-Bahn X car. According to Schmidt, this exchange takes place in a resource -saving manner as part of planned maintenance work.

The introduction of these new pictograms reflects the efforts of the Viennese lines to increase accessibility and to improve the usability of their means of transport.
