Vienna starts winter package: 1,000 new places for homeless people

From October 29, the Fund Social Es Vienna (FSW) starts this year's winter season with its winter package for homeless people. Thanks to this initiative, around 1,000 additional places will be created to meet the needs of apartment and homeless people. These places are added to the existing 7,000 overnight stays and stays that are available all year round.

This winter package is implemented for the 15th time in cooperation with partner organizations such as Caritas, the Arbeiter-Samariterbund and the Red Cross. It is an important offer of help that is valid until the end of April 2025. At a total of 13 locations, emergency quarters are set up, in addition to three heat stubborns that are open in 24-hour operation. This not only offered overnight accommodation, but also space for the day to meet the high rush to the existing day centers.

financing and support

The entire project is coordinated by the FSW with a budget of 15.5 million euros. The social city councilor Peter Hacker (SPÖ) emphasizes the importance of the winter package: "We also ensure in the cold season that nobody in Vienna has to spend the night due to a lack of sleeping place on the street." FSW managing director Susanne Winkler emphasizes that this action can only be realized by supporting urban politics and close cooperation with the partner organizations.

An additional tool this winter season is the FSW cold app. This app enables passers -by to mobilize social work support if you meet homeless people who endure in the cold. The social workers attend the affected people on site and offer help, which represents an additional contribution to improving the situation in this cold season.

These initiatives are important to recognize and support the needs of the vulnerable population groups in Vienna. For more information and details about the winter package, the reporting here can be found on www.meinbezirk.at.
