Pigeon problem at Franz-Jonas-Platz: Solutions wanted in the Floridsdorf district

on Franz-Jonas-Platz in Floridsdorf, an increasingly growing pigeon population causes trouble. Thousands of people cross this important place every day, but the pigeons also seem to have settled there, which quickly becomes a problem.

In the last meeting of the district council, this topic was discussed intensively because the party Team HC Strache submitted an application to solve the "bird fecrillation problem". They call for more frequent cleaning of the seating and the surrounding area of the subway and express train station in the hope of reducing the unpleasant pollution.

origin of the problem

Gernot Nachtrebel, the chairman of the SPÖ environmental committee, emphasized that the root of the problem was somewhere else. His committee is already working on an application by the Greens, who aims to control and regulate the pigeon population. This application has been in processing for almost a year, which shows how complicated the solution is.

Apparently it is planned to set up a pigeon carpet in which real pigeon eggs are to be replaced by dummies in order to regulate reproduction. Nevertheless, the search for a suitable location is difficult. In earlier meetings, it was already reported that the MA 49 - Forest and Agriculture - had requested the Federal Railways because of a location, which, however, received a cancellation.

A new strategy was presented at the last session: Nachtrebel explained that the Vienna lines are now also looking for a suitable location. In addition, he suggested that Team HC Strache be handed over to the environmental committee for further examination.

Werner Cermak, club chairman of Team HC Strache, supported this idea, but emphatically demanded that the dirt should be eliminated promptly. Alexander Polansky, District Council of the Greens, threw in that it is important to remove the dirt, but is not sustainable if the problem is not packed at the root.

The situation on Franz-Jonas-Platz remains tense, and it remains to be seen how the district council will ultimately deal with the growing pigeon population. The search for a long -term solution has just started, but it could pave the way for a cleaner and more pleasant environment for visitors to the square.
