City of Vienna doubles budget for preventive men's work to 300,000 euros
Vienna recently took a significant step towards strengthening violence protection. The Finance Committee has decided to double the funds for prevention work with boys and men from 150,000 euros to now to 300,000 euros per year. This decision is intended to help prevent violence before it arises.
The city of Vienna has increasingly taken measures to improve the security and violence protection network in recent years. This includes the opening of the 5th Wiener Frauenhaus, which was built especially for girls and young women affected by violence. The new measure was announced on Friday, which is supposed to represent a significant building block in comprehensive protection of violence.
prevention in focus
The main focus of this initiative is on prevention. Instead of only reacting to existing violent situations, violence within social relationships and in public should be reduced by targeted measures. The funds will flow into men's advice, anti-violence training, therapies and violence prevention programs in youth and couple work.
The work of the Vienna Men's Advice is expanded. The offers are aimed not only at adults, but also to young people. The programs aim to address different forms of violence and to develop strategies in order to overcome them. This should also reduce and end violence against women in the long term.
The Viennese "Violence Protection Jour Fixe", a regular exchange between experts, police and relevant city sites, has contributed to the development of this measure. Together, work is being carried out to prevent violence from the outset and offer victims. The increase in funds is considered a clear signal: violence against women has no place in the city.
a common responsibility
Kathrin Gaál, Councilor for Frauen and Vice Mayor, made it clear that the doubling of the funds is not only a fiscal decision, but also a sign of social responsibility. "We look together and further expand our security net," she said. Financial City Councilor Peter Hanke agreed and emphasized that the expansion of prevention work with guys and men is a sensible addition to the existing violence measures.
The preventive approach is crucial to create a safe environment for women and girls. In order to be able to offer direct support for people affected by violence, various emergency numbers are also available, including the 24-hour woman's call call and the Frauenhelpline.
Through such measures, Vienna shows that you are willing to combat the causes of violence and not just the symptoms. This initiative could serve as a model for other cities and signal that prevention and protection have to be in the foreground.
