In a current survey, it turned out that the Viennese population has a great preference for the traditional Christmas markets. According to the study of SME research Austria, which was carried out on behalf of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, 71 percent of the Viennese intends to visit at least one Christmas market. This again shows how strongly the cultural tradition in the city and the associated anticipation are anchored for the Advent season.
On average, the Viennese plan to visit about four different markets during the festive time, which corresponds to a total of around 4.5 million visits. Vienna with its 14 Christmas markets and around 800 stands is the stronghold of the Christkindlmarkets in Austria.

The Christmas markets in Vienna are not only a attraction for the locals, but are also very popular with tourists. Margarete Gumprecht, the chairwoman of the trade division in the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, emphasizes that the average expenses per visit are around 30 euros. This number has increased compared to the 22 euros in 2019, which indicates a positive economic development.
Total sales of around 140 million euros are expected during Advent without taking into account the expenses of tourists. This underlines the economic importance of the Christmas markets for the city of Vienna and its surroundings.

The atmosphere of the Christmas markets attracts many visitors, because for more than half of the respondents there is a sociable atmosphere and the opportunity to spend time with friends, the main reason to visit a market. In addition, visitors appreciate the diverse gastronomic offer: in 43 percent of the survey participants, drinks such as punch and mulled wine are very popular. The culinary treats such as chestnuts and roasted almonds are also very popular, especially for the 29 percent that are looking forward to the gastronomic delicacies.
Thirty -three percent of those surveyed are interested in handicrafts and Christmas decorations, while 16 percent are looking for Christmas gifts. The Viennese not only show interest in the festive atmosphere, but also in the possibility of acquiring handmade and special gifts.
The Christmas markets in Vienna are not only a place of gathering, but also an important economic factor. They promote the sense of community and contribute to celebration of the advent, while at the same time offering a platform for local dealers to present their goods. This development is a gratifying sign of the economic vitality of the city in the contemplative season.
