The Austrian youth championships in lightning and quick chess took place in the Fuchpalast in St. Veit an der Glan last week. At the beginning, the youth-state team team championship was held, a competition in which the individual federal states are represented by teams with eight players each. Vienna narrowly prevailed against Upper Austria and secured the title, with the decision due to a better third party. Styria, slightly favored by its elo numbers, had to do third place after defeats against Vienna and Upper Austria. The fight for the medals was hard, with Burgenland in fourth place, followed by Lower Austria, Vorarlberg, Carinthia, Salzburg and Tyrol. However, the distances to the top teams were clearly noticeable.

On Tuesday, October 29, and Wednesday, October 30th, the individual competitions followed in the fast and lightning -fast chess. Here Vienna showed an impressive performance and home to 24 medals, including 10 gold medals. The competition for the placement behind it was also intensive: Styria secured 17 medals, while Upper Austria won 15 medals. Although Upper Austria won 6 gold medals and thus had its nose on this point, Styria remained in the overall ranking with "only" 5 gold medals behind Upper Austria. Further gold medals were awarded to Lower Austria (two) and the Burgenland and Vorarlberg (one each). The entire results and medalists can be viewed at chess-results
