Orange lights for women's rights: rally in new construction against violence

on Thursday evening, November 28th, Urban-Loritz-Platz shone in a bright orange. The event was part of the campaign "16 days against violence against women and girls", in which various groups such as the association "Catcalls of Vienna" and the network of women's rights of Amnesty International Austria were involved.

The participants, estimated 25 in number, gathered under the motto "Violence has no place". They lit orange -colored torches and used pyrotechnics to set a sign against violence. On the ground they wrote with chalk the stories of victims that were directly faced with gender -specific violence.

common sign against violence

The action, which took place on Urban-Loritz-Platz, not only directed against individual incidents, but was also a powerful symbol for the common rejection of any form of violence. It was read on signs: "Women's rights are human rights" and "never again female". According to the stories of victims, a participant, Steffi, read the frequent experiences to those present.

One of the most shocking stories was about a woman who intervened on the train out of civil courage to protect another woman from sexual harassment. However, this courageous act led to massive insults by perpetrators and silent witnesses. This and similar events with chalk was shown on the ground, which stimulated many passers -by to stop and think.

Although the number of participants was quite low, the action did not miss its effect. Passers -by kept standing, the stories looked at and listened to Steffi. A woman even noticed to her partner: "I should have been up there" before finally going.

female in Vienna

The organizers of the campaign reported that the number of female female in Vienna is alarming. By November 25th, 27 murders of women and girls were registered in Austria, including eleven female female in Vienna this year alone. Most recently there was a particularly tragic incident in October when a husband closed his wife with a wooden stick.

Although no female construction has not yet been reported in the district, district chief Markus Reiter (Greens) emphasized that the problem of domestic violence and partner was widespread. Rider appealed to the need for joint efforts in the prevention of these forms of violence. "Prevention of violence requires joint efforts at different levels. Only in this way has no place in the human rights district of new buildings against women!"
