Brigittenau is planning super block: more green and less traffic for everyone!

The Brigittenau faces an exciting development, since the small party on the left has brought an application to create a "super block" in the district. Inspired by the successful project in favorites, the applicants now want to reduce car traffic in their own neighborhood and create green spaces.

A "super block" is an innovative urban planning concept that aims to relieve residential areas of unnecessary through traffic. The concept provides to create surfaces between the blockade of houses that must not be used by cars. Instead, these areas could be converted into permeable green areas, which could benefit both the quality of life of the residents and the use of public spaces.

locations and challenges

The concern of the Left Party was considered in the last meeting of the district council, where the application was transferred to the transport commission. This is now responsible for the selection of suitable places that are available for the implementation of a super block. The guarantee of public transport could be particularly challenging, especially in those places that were identified by the cycling lobby as little traffic.

A potential location is the area east of the northwest station. This area is currently strongly crossed by streets, which is predestined for the creation of encounter zones. The orientation towards the successful concept of the "super grätzls" in favorites, which was implemented in 2023, could help the initiators to develop an effective plan.

The renewed application for creating a super block is not the first attempt by the left party. Club leaders Hannah Luschnig and district council Stefan Ohrhallinger have already brought in an equal application in the past, which was, however, set up on the basis of a recommended evaluation. In the meantime, the "Supergrätzl" has been awarded the VCÖ mobility price and highlighted by City Councilor Sima as a showcase project, which increased the pressure on the decision-makers. There is also a funding at the federal level through the "master plan", which can still be used by the end of February.

The district chief Christine Dubravac-Widholm from the SPÖ welcomes the assignment of the application to the transport commission, but warns against being carelessly approaching such interventions in the cityscape. "A poorly thought -out intervention can lead to long -established residents with the new criteria of a super block," she notes. It is important that the needs of the residents are taken into account before fundamental changes are made in the neighborhood.

For the Brigittenau, this could be the first step into a traffic -calmed and greener future. The decision to implement the project is now in the hands of the traffic experts and the district council.
