Tree protection in danger: political excitement at the Palais Clam-Gallas
The conversion of the historically significant Palais Clam Gallas on the Alsergrund ensures concern in the political landscape. The Embassy of Qatar plans to move into the former French cultural institute in 2025. In this context, the district expresses serious concerns about the trees on the area, the protection of which is apparently in danger.
The district leader Saya Ahmad from the SPÖ has criticized the way in recent media inquiries how the existing trees are dealt with on the construction site. In her opinion, tree protection is neglected. Ahmad reported critical observations that are supported by official checks: roots of the trees were uncovered by careless construction work and some trees were damaged by machines. This clearly shows that the provisions of the Vienna Tree Protection Act are not complied with.

The district chief further emphasized that the protective measures for the trees in the park of the palace do not correspond to the existing standards. In view of the far -reaching challenges through the climate crisis, Ahmad appears incomprehensible how the embassy of the Qatar can handle the trees on its private site so carelessly. "It should not be that trees are unnecessarily atrocely until they become sick or breakproof and finally have to be removed," said Ahmad.
Ahmad urgently calls on the message to refrain from disregarding the provisions of Viennese tree protection. She announced that an official letter to the message has already been set up, but the feedback was so far disappointing. The protection of our trees is a central concern for the district, especially in an inner -city district such as the Alsergrund, where trees are crucial for the microclimate and climate protection.
The political reactions to the situation on the Palais Clam Gallas show that environmental protection and responsible use of natural resources in the community are always on the agenda. Trees are not only essential for air quality, but also contribute to the quality of life in the city. The coming months will have to show how the dialogue between the responsible authorities and the message continues and whether sustainable solutions can be found to protect the trees.
