Southeast Tangent: Mega renovation starts with a clever traffic concept!

The traffic situation in Vienna is faced with a challenge from Monday, because the most frequented street in Austria, the southeast tangent (A23), is being renovated. Every day, around 230,000 vehicles pass the section between the Prater knot and the Handelskai junction. As the Austria , the need for this renovation work must now be made: a main construction measure must begin to improve the street infrastructure. To ensure the flow of traffic, all lanes remain open during the entire construction work.

From March 17, 2025, the main construction measure starts in the direction of travel north and is carried out in three phases. First, the work will take place on the right for a period of ten weeks. The construction site then hikes in the middle for two weeks, with the Handelskai exit for vehicles that come from the A23. In the last phase of the work, the construction site is positioned on the far left, so that the three lanes on this page can drive past the construction site on the right, as described in detail. In order to facilitate traffic routing, a coloring system is to be installed that helps the drivers to orient themselves better.

a challenge for road users

The bypass ramp in the direction of Handelskai in the direction of Prater is being blocked during the construction work, but the departure towards the center remains open. From June 23, 2025, the renovation in the direction of travel will be handled similarly. After a winter break from October 2025 to March 2026, the two junctions knot Prater and Handelskai are on the plan. The extensive measures are expected to be completed by the end of August 2026. The road users must therefore adapt to long diversions and larger waiting times.
