Refurbishment of the Augarten Bridge: Vienna creates new cycle paths for everyone!
The renovation of the Augarten Bridge in Vienna begins on April 14, 2025 and is part of a comprehensive project that is intended to further improve the infrastructure for cyclists in the city. It is planned to redesign the existing cycling strip into a structural two-direction cycle path that is connected to the cycling systems in Oberen Donaustraße and Unteren Augartenstrasse. According to wien.gv.at Oberen Donaustraße renewed in front of the Lower Augartenstrasse.
As part of the project, plantations of three new trees are also planned by autumn 2025. From the start of construction until April 22, 2025, the traffic measures provide for a straight lane and a right turn lane in Oberen Donaustraße. From April 22nd, two lanes, a straight-ahead and a straight-line right-wing lane, will be available. However, the crossing of the bike path to the Lower Audartenstrasse and the cycle path in Oberen Donaustraße are closed for the construction period, while walking is maintained. The planned construction end is May 31, 2025.
Wiener bike offensive 2025
The upcoming renovation is in the context of the Vienna cycle path offensive, which includes over 250 projects and almost 100 kilometers in the main bike path network. A total of around 130 million euros have already been invested in the expansion of the Viennese cycling infrastructure. This offensive began in 2021, and since then numerous cycle path projects have been implemented or initiated. A further 24 kilometers of new cycling infrastructure are planned in the construction program 2025 to ensure safe and comfortable cycle paths in the city ( wien.gv.at ).
The cycle paths in Vienna are increasingly being focused on: the proportion of cycle paths in 2024 is estimated to be 11 %, a significant increase compared to 7 % in 2019. From the belt to the Danube Canal, a new bike connection is also continued via Alserbachstrasse, whereby the last section is to be implemented along Heinrich-Collin-Straße 2026.
extensive cycling infrastructure projects
The cycle path offensive comprises a variety of specific projects that improve existing structures and create new cycling connections. Among other things, the Meiselstraße, Nordbahnstraße and the Klimahighway will also experience relevant improvements in the coming years. These initiatives aim to make cycling in Vienna safer and inviting and to increase the quality of life in the districts ().
Through these comprehensive measures, which aim to doublet the cycling infrastructure, Vienna is further strengthened as a bicycle city and contributes to the reduction of motorized traffic. Citizens can look forward to an improved and future -oriented cycling infrastructure.
