Revolution in the intestine: how pregnant women radically redesign their body!

An international research team under the direction of Josef Penninger from the Medical University of Vienna has made a groundbreaking discovery: During pregnancy and breastfeeding, the intestine changes massively. These comprehensive changes, which are characterized by an increase in the intestinal surface and a radical restructuring, found their way into the renowned pages of the specialist journal "Nature". The researchers observed that hormonal changes, in particular through the rank receptor/rank-league system, play a central role in the doubling of the surface of the intestinal villains, which is of crucial importance for the sufficient nutrient supply of mothers and their babies, as is important, as on OTS reported.

This study particularly emphasizes how hormones adapt the structure and function of the intestine during pregnancy and breastfeeding in order to meet the increased nutrient requirement. Without the Rank/Rankl system, a significant restriction of the village enlargement was found in experiments on genetically modified mice, which can have significant effects on milk production and the weight of the newborns. First author Masahiro Onji describes that these changes may also have cross -generational consequences of metabolic, which optimizes the flow of food in the intestine. These profound knowledge not only promise new approaches to the treatment of colon cancer, but also a better insight into the nutrition during the critical phases of motherhood.

right for pregnant students

For pregnant women and breastfeeding students at the University of Vienna, special protection regulations apply. You have the right to have you leaving off to protect yourself and your child and not take part in dangerous activities such as laboratory work or certain courses. These regulations are important in order to avoid possible risks, as explained on univie.ac.at . If a risk potential is determined, students must adapt their events or, if necessary, look for alternatives. The university supports this special phase of life so that a smooth course of study remains possible, even if delays are not attributed to the university.
