Green courtyards for Hernals: Benefit from new funding!

On June 2, 2025, the city of Vienna and those responsible for the Wieneu+program informed about new funding opportunities for greening in the Hernals district. The aim of this initiative is to not only make the courtyards more attractive, but also more climate and environmentally friendly. For smaller projects, up to 10,000 euros are provided in grants, while innovative projects can receive up to 500,000 euros. This was launched by the City of Vienna in cooperation with the area support urban renewal (GB*).

The funding is aimed at owners and residents who want to seal and green their courtyards. Particular attention is paid to improving the quality of stay through cooling and greening measures. In order to inform the citizens about the possibilities, an information event under the title "Green Courts for Hernals" will take place in the Kulturcafé Max on June 4, 2025, which will last from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Interested parties can get advice on funding criteria and implementation options by experts and experience a tour through particularly successful courtyards in Hernals.

eligible measures and conditions

Various measures are possible in the funding. This includes demolition work, floor change, the use of multi -year plants, cisterns and irrigation systems. However, garden tools, planting troughs and furniture are excluded from the funding. The use of peat and PVC-containing materials is also not allowed. These framework conditions are intended to ensure that the implemented projects are sustainable and ecologically responsible. The contact to the area supervision urban renewal serves as a contact point for possible questions and applications.

The Wieneu+ urban renewal program is not only limited to Hernals. The promotion of the refrigeration and greening can also be applied for for projects across Vienna. However, the grown-up funding, which provides for a maximum funding amount of 500,000 euros, only applies to innovative projects within the Hernals program area. In addition, it is important that prior dissipation is always carried out for funded greenery measures.

sustainable urban development in focus

The new funding approach is in line with the current challenges of urban rooms, such as the increasing temperatures and the need for more green areas in cities. According to transforming-cities.de, three quarters of the world population will live in cities by 2050. This development brings with it ecological and social problems that have to be addressed in a targeted manner. Funding projects such as the WiEU+program are therefore crucial for a future-proof urban design.

With the active participation and the involvement of citizens, dialogue and commitment should be promoted. A current publication shows that citizen participation leads to more transparency and successful implementation of local projects. The development of stable and sustainable urban systems is not only a challenge, but also an opportunity for innovative concepts in urban planning.
