Greens demand permanently cheap living space for Vienna's students!

Wien, Österreich - The Greens in Vienna have announced their support for the initiative of the city government to reduce housing costs for students. However, Judith Pühringer, top candidate of the Green Vienna, expressed concerns. She criticizes that the current measures only offer short -term solutions and lack structural approaches to improve the living situation in the long term. The nota Bene is that the housing cost burden for many students is between 38 and 43 percent, which is a significant financial burden, according to Georg Prack, residential building spokesman for the Greens.

The lack of access to affordable living space in Vienna forces many students into a precarious situation. For this reason, the Greens call for a permanent ensuring affordable living space for all students in the city. OTS reports that the Greens have presented a comprehensive 5-point plan to have the situation to improve.

The 5-point plan for students

The measures of the plan include the following points:

  • Permanent access to the community building and social housing for under 30 year olds who study in Vienna or do an apprenticeship, regardless of their previous place of residence.
  • Introduction of a housing deposit fund to avoid high deposits when renting apartments.
  • granting residential allowance for students, apprentices and others in training that were previously excluded, as well as better consideration of WG constellations.
  • Expansion and attracting of funded, affordable student: inner home places.
  • reduction in energy costs through funding for renovations, heat protection and free energy advice.

These measures are urgently required because the cost of living for students is increasing, while the financial means remain the same. As SPIEGEL Housing shortages confronted that need to be mastered.

The need for reforms in relation to the living situation for students is undisputed. A continuous dialogue between the city regulations and the affected groups could help find sustainable solutions in order to master these challenges and create a more livable environment for the students: inside.
