Vienna plans two new schools against the IT shortage shortage!

The Vienna Chamber of Commerce (WKW) has announced the plans for the establishment of two new schools in cooperation with the City of Vienna. This initiative is aimed at the training of IT specialists and takes into account the growing educational needs in Vienna. The new higher technical educational institution (HTL) should concentrate on the field of information technology, while an international school with a focus is planned in Eastern European languages. When the business parliament was constituted, the chamber president Walter Ruck was re -elected, which underlined the importance of these educational projects.

The need for IT specialists is particularly high in Vienna. According to current estimates, around 6,000 specialists are missing in this area. In order to counteract the shortage of skilled workers, the HTL is expected to open in the school year 2027 and should offer space for up to 620 students. Walter Ruck emphasizes the need to promote the MINT area in order to master digital transformation and the associated challenges. There are currently ten HTL locations in Vienna, but the need is still high.

Details on the new HTL and international school

The planned IT-HTL will make an important contribution to improving the training situation in Vienna. Alexander Biach, director of the WKW, explains that the school will take up both pupils up to the Matura and those who receive a technical school. There is also a suitable location, whereby the school is to be operated under the private school law. Subject to the financing partner for infrastructure and operation, further details are still open on the part of the city.

The international school should begin with a primary school and aims to recruit a larger group of schoolchildren. It is also designed as a "recognized European school" to strengthen the role of Vienna as a location for international organizations and companies.

Cooperation between economy and education

The UBIT Vienna (specialist group management consultancy, accounting and information technology) sees HTLS as essential training facilities that combine theory and practice. These schools promote a profound understanding of IT and are crucial for the training of the required specialists. Rüdiger Linhart, the chairman of the professional group IT of the UBIT Vienna, emphasizes the need for close cooperation between education and economy in order to cope with the future challenges in the IT area.

The "Design your future" campaign The UBIT Vienna emphasizes the relevance of computer science training and is actively committed to a gender -friendly design of training opportunities. Long -term collaborations should be ensured in such a way that the young talents are kept in Vienna and optimally trained.

The discussions about the financing of the new HTLs are already underway, and an agreement could take place in autumn 2025. Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) has also spoken out for the implementation of the new educational plans. If the federal government does not provide suitable schools, the city itself wants to become active in order to cover the training needs.

Overall, this realignment not only counteracts the shortage of skilled workers through this realignment in the education sector, but also wants to secure the digital future of the city. The plans for the founding of the new HTL and the international school are an important step in this direction.
