Vienna threatens UNESCO-Rote List: FPÖ criticizes city government sharply!

Wien, Österreich - Vienna may face severe diplomatic embarrassment, since according to a current report by the FPÖ, the city could land on the Red List of UNESCO. In this context, FPÖ planning spokesman Toni Mahdalik criticizes Mayor Ludwig and the Red-Pink coalition. He accuses the city government of abusing the world heritage for real estate interests and is vehemently committed to protecting the historical cityscape. Mahdalik emphasizes that Vienna should belong to Viennese and not the construction groups. These statements are supported by the UNESCO, which in a "Draft Decision" demands massive redimation of current urban planning projects that are dangerous for the status of the World Heritage Site.

The historical center of Vienna, which has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage since 2001, extends over an area of 371 hectares and comprises around 1,600 objects. These include important buildings such as St. Stephen's Cathedral and the Hofburg, which are also part of the rich history of Vienna. As a former hub in European history, Vienna was not only founded as a Roman legion camp, but developed under the Babenbergers and Habsburgs into a flourishing trading center. The city has developed over the centuries into a cultural center, especially in music, with composers such as Mozart and Beethoven who worked here.

The red list of UNESCO

The UNESCO has put Vienna on the "Red List" of endangered world sites since 2017. The reason for this is urban development developments, especially at the Heumarkt that endanger the unique cityscape. Mahdalik has been warning of a cityscape -destroying prestige project that could endanger the historical integrity of Vienna for years. The current situation was described by him as a direct consequence of a "speculator policy" of the city government. This supposed deception of the World Heritage Committee not only harms Vienna's reputation, but could also have far -reaching negative consequences for the advantages and the value of the world heritage.

The different eras of urban development can be seen in the historical center of Vienna: from the Gothic forms of St. St. Stephen's Cathedral, to the baroque splendid buildings such as the Hofburg to the majestic buildings of the ring road from the late 19th century. Vienna has helped this diversity to be one of the 700 most outstanding cultural and natural monuments of humanity. In addition to architecture, the musical tradition also plays a central role, which extends from the waltzes of the Strauss dynasty to the temporary smithy with personalities like Sigmund Freud.

claims to preserve the inheritance

The FPÖ is now calling for measures to preserve the cultural heritage and to prevent a further loss of Vienna's identity. At the same time, the need is emphasized to seek dialogue about sustainable urban development and respect for the historical conditions of the city. The population of Vienna, which identifies with their cityscape, is asked to actively participate in these discussions and decisions in order to secure the special flair and the cultural substance of Vienna for future generations.
