World Smoking Day 2025: Enlightenment for a smoke -free Austria!

Österreich - On today's World Nut Rauma Day, May 28, 2025, the focus is on the health risks of tobacco and nicotine consumption. In Austria, about 1.5 million people from 15 years from 15 daily smoke, which is about 21 % of the population. According to Gailtal-Journal , five percent of the population also use e-cigarettes almost daily every day.

The World Health Organization (WHO) set the motto for the World Nut Rauma Day 2025 on "expose the charm". This topic is intended to focus on showing the risks of tobacco and nicotine products and illuminating the strategies that maintain tobacco consumption. In particular, the influence of marketing and product design, which particularly appeal to young people, are worrying.

Enlightenment and support

In order to counteract the high consumption of tobacco, the Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK) and other institutions rely on education and support. On June 2 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., the ÖGK offers a free online lecture to clarify the dangers of smoking and how to live smoke-free. In addition to this lecture, the ÖGK also offers free nicotine-free courses that are available online or at various locations.

The smoke -free phone, an initiative of social security, the federal states and the Ministry of Health, offers telephone support for everyone who wants to stop smoking on 0800 810 013. These offers are part of the comprehensive efforts of the ÖGK, the largest social health insurance in Austria with around 7.6 million insured persons to help members with nicotine cessation.

The challenges in Europe

The WHO in its report expresses that tobacco consumption is still one of the main causes of deaths and disabilities through non -transferable diseases in the European region. Dr. Gauden Galea from the WHO emphasizes the urgency of more effective tobacco control concepts in order to counteract the alarming situation. According to estimates, 179 million adults and 4 million young people in the European region consume tobacco.

It is particularly alarming that 18 % of all deaths are due to non -transferable diseases in the region to tobacco consumption. Forecasts indicate that the highest tobacco consumption rate worldwide could be achieved by 2030 without better strategies. The WHO MPOWER concept, which includes various tobacco control measures, has the goal of reducing tobacco consumption by 30 % by 2025; However, only 11 countries are on the best way to achieve this goal.

In summary, World Smoking Day is an important occasion to draw attention to the considerable health risks through tobacco products and to examine the progress and challenges in the fight against tobacco consumption. A united effort of governments, health facilities and civil society is required to reduce the number of smokers and to promote the health of the population.
