Forest fires in Europe: Alarming increase until 2100 threatens!

In the European Union, around 500,000 hectares of forest burn every year, which almost corresponds to the double area of Luxembourg. These alarming numbers come from an EASAC report created by 23 European scientists. Mortimer Müller from the University of Natural Research (BOKU) Vienna has actively worked on this report and warns of the possible consequences of global warming, monocultures and rural exodus.

The report predicts that the probability of extreme forest fires in Europe could double by 2100. In southern Europe in particular, heavy fire events can be expected every two years, while central Europe also has to prepare for rising temperatures. Despite improved control options, the number of fires decreases in the overall view, but individual fire are greater and more intense.

causes and economic effects

The increasing temperatures and the increasing frequency of several years of droughts are the main factors that increase the probability of extreme fires. The urban areas in Europe could be more affected than, for example, in North America or Asia, which can lead to considerable economic damage. The focus of EU forest fire policy is currently on combating and emergency measures. However, experts are calling for an increased focus on preventive measures.

The necessary measures include combating climate change, risk -based land management, the renaturation of bogs and sustainable forest management. These measures could not only help prevent fires, but also have positive effects on biodiversity and carbon storage.

learning process for society

Society in Europe must learn to live with forest fires and to adapt to the new circumstances. This requires investments in education and communication to improve the “fire competence” of the population. The report emphasizes the need that all stakeholders work together to develop effective strategies for risk reduction.

The European forest fire information system (Effis)

An important instrument for support in fire fighting is the European forest fire information system (Effis). This internet-based geographical information system offers real-time and historical information on forest fires in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Effis is designed to support the forest fire protection services in the EU and in neighboring countries and provides uniform information for the European Commission and the European Parliament.

Since its introduction in 1998, Effis has been made by a network of experts from 43 countries. The modules of this system include the evaluation of the fire risk, the assessment of damage and the assessment of emissions and smoke expansion. Almost 2 million data records from 22 countries are currently stored in the fire database of EFFIS, which provide valuable information for prevention and control measures.

The effective use of Effis and the implementation of the required prevention measures are crucial to cope with the challenges that arise from climate change and frequent forest fires. This is the only way to effectively reduce the impending danger from forest fires and protect the valuable forest walks.
