Waffe arrest: Negotiations between Ukraine and Russia failed again!

Istanbul, Türkei - On June 2, 2025, the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine were temporarily demolished via a possible ceasefire. The second round of negotiations took place in Istanbul and only took about an hour. Russian news agencies, including Tass and Interfax, confirmed the end of the talks, while an official confirmation from the Ukrainian side or the Turkish host is still pending. Ukraine gave the Russian representatives a list of names of Ukrainian children who were delayed to Russia to enable their return home.

Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj also announced that a new exchange of prisoners of war would be being worked on. The aim of the talks was to find a way out of the war that has been going on for three years. Kiev called for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire as a first step, while Moscow was linked to the fire break on conditions. These include the waiver of western states on arms deliveries to Ukraine and a moratorium on the mobilization of soldiers from Kiev.

Current military situation

While the diplomatic efforts stagnate, Russia continues massive attacks on Ukraine. Recently reported Kiev of the greatest Russian drone attack since the beginning of the war, in which 364 floors, including 355 drones, were used. Tragically, three minors died in one of these attacks. Selenskyj therefore demands increased pressure and new sanctions from the West against Russia to counter the military pressure of the Russian armed forces.

The military commitment of Russia can also be seen in occupied areas of the East of Ukraine, where the Romaniwka village was conquered. A report by the US secret service DIA suggests that Putin believes in an "ultimate victory" in the Ukraine War and plans to maintain military pressure by the end of 2025. In this context, Chancellor Friedrich Merz also asked Chinese President Xi Jinping for support for international efforts for an armistice.

international efforts

The current negotiations are part of a long series of diplomatic initiatives that have been running since the beginning of the conflict in February 2022. The first ceasefire negotiations in spring 2022 failed quickly, and numerous international efforts, including UN resolutions, did not lead to a change in the Russian stance. Another diplomatic sensitivity shows the fact that Donald Trump, who initiated new placement attempts in February 2025, according to press reports, rejects the lies of Vladimir Putin and urges new sanctions.

Selenskyj, who shortly plans a surprising visit to Berlin to discuss possible discussions with Russia, emphasized that Ukraine is fighting for sovereignty and territorial integrity. At the same time, it is expected that the EU engagement for peace negotiations and the improvement of defense ability will continue to be promoted. Historically, the Minsk processes from 2018 to 2020 led to brittle ceasefire agreements, but hopes for a permanent solution seem to be low at the moment.

The continued military operation in Russia, the annexation of the Crimea, as well as the continuous battles in Donbas, throw complex shadows on future peace negotiations. The pressure on everyone involved remains, while the international interest in the end of the conflict continues to grow. The failed conversations of Istanbul are just another chapter in this tragic saga of war and diplomacy.
